The 10 year anniversary of September 11th, 2001 is coming up, and there is an upcoming app to commemorate the date. The 9/11 Memorial: Past, Present, and Future will be an iPad exclusive app book launching on September 1st. The app is from writer-director Steve Rosenbaum, who made the powerful documentary, 7 Days In September. The app focuses on the Twin Towers site including the original development, the attacks & aftermath, and the construction of the memorial that is set to open on September 11th of this year.

The app includes over 40 videos, with over an hour of original content including pre 9/11 footage, a few chilling clips of the attacks, and a major focus on the new memorial. There are also over 400 high resolution photos to explore to give you a vivid view of the past and present of the site. The major highlight of the app is “Reflecting Absence”, the 9/11 Memorial Plaza and Twin Polls by Architect Michael Arad. The app also includes an interactive timeline of the memorial construction as well as an exclusive interview with Mr. Arad.

The goal of the app is to provide an intimate, personal, self-directed exploration so you can engage in the memories on your own terms. The New York Observer has a great article on the app, which includes an interview with the app creator Steve Rosenbaum. Mr. Rosenbaum tells about the app, and why he chose to make it for the iPad,

“The app lays it out in clear bold chunks—here’s the story before, when the World Trade Center was being built, and then after it was built, and the day of the attacks, and what’s happened since…

I wanted it to be more of an immersive experience,” he said. “The nature of the photographs are so powerful, so to render them in anything but full color seemed wrong to me. And I didn’t want it to be viewed on a phone. I wanted it to be big and glossy…

The iPad is the single fastest selling consumer device in the history of consumer electronics,” he said. “There are 30 million now on the market. What’s more limited? A beautiful glossy photo book that sits in Barnes & Noble, or something that’s free and on a device that lots of people have?”

The 9/11 Memorial: Past, Present, and Future will launch on September 1st for the iPad only, and will be free until September 12th, and then $9.99 after that. There is also the free Explore 9/11 app available for the iPhone right now which also focuses on the memorial.

There is also a video walkthrough of The 9/11 Memorial: Past, Present, and Future on the app’s website.
