Apple Celebrates The App Store Turning Five With Free Apps & Timeline

This morning, it was surprising to find that some of the best apps in the App Store had dropped to free. It made for our best Apps for Free Daily section to date, and now it turns out the price drops were orchestrated by Apple. They have introduced a new section of the App Store marking the App Store’s fifth anniversary. That section includes five premium free games, and five premium free apps to mark the milestone. Almost all ten have been previous editor’s choices by Apple, and they’re all must have downloads.

As a matter of fact, none of the ten have ever been free before, and many offer significant price drops of $4 and upwards. The five year anniversary is a major milestone, and giving these apps away for free is such a great way to mark it. Apple describes 5 Years of the App Store,

From the 500 apps available at launch in 2008 to the more than 900,000 at your fingertips today, it’s been a remarkably prolific five years for the App Store. To celebrate, we’re giving everyone five landmark games and five groundbreaking apps for a limited time.

In addition to the free apps and games, Apple has also provided a timeline with the various App Store milestones over the past five years. From Facebook reaching five million downloads in 2008, to the App store reaching 50 billion downloads overall earlier this year, major moments are included that put the rapid acceleration in perspective.
