There have been reports about the fifth generation iPhone’ camera for months now. Most point to an 8 megapixel lens, and there was an interesting photo posted on Flickr that just may be from the next iPhone’s camera. The photo is pictured above, and can be seen full size here courtesy of Pocketnow.com, who first spotted the image. The photo’s EFIX data suggest it was taken by an iPhone 4, but the image itself has been cropped down to 5 megapixels at 2235×2291. The original size was just under 8 megapixels at 3264×2448, and the lens aperture is different as well.
The iPhone 4 has a lens aperture of 3.85mm f/2.8, while this photo is at 4.3mm f/2.4, which has a better f-stop and focal length. Also, the report claims the photo was taken by an Apple engineer on his lunch break. The most telling aspect is that the image has now been pulled from Flickr, which is always a good sign of a slip of something accurate. It’s a great looking photo, but any iPhone camera is always limited by a lack of zoom. You can keep cramming in megapixels, but smart phone cameras still can’t capture light well because of the flat surface, and there will always be a lack of zoom. Still though, the iPhone camera upgrade is always a nice thing to see.
