TV Shows Join iCloud Re-Downloading – Comes To Apple TV Too

Apple is currently beta testing iCloud re-downloading, and all users can re-download their previous purchases of music, apps, and books. Earlier this week they added TV shows to the service, so now you can download any TV show you’ve previously purchased to any of your devices linked to your iTunes account. The iCloud stores your purchase history so on any Mac/PC or iOS device you can go to the purchased tab to see a list of everything you’ve bought. Then the little iCloud icon appears to allow you to re-download that item.

TV Shows are the first video type added to the iCloud, and could indicate that movies are coming soon. The TV shows aren’t available for auto-delivery where if you purchase it one one device it’s automatically downloaded to your other devices. That service is still limited to music, apps, and books, but we shall see what happens in the Fall. This is a nice step in the right direction, and there’s still quite a bit of time for iCloud to evolve before it’s official release.

With this new feature comes a new Apple TV software update which provides streaming access to previously purchased TV shows. On the Apple TV under the TV shows tab, there is now a purchased section. Also you can actually buy TV shows on the Apple TV, which up to this point has been limited to only renting TV shows. The update also adds Vimeo video playback to the internet section to add to the user generated videos available adding to the YouTube support. The update is detailed in Apple TV support documentation:

TV show purchases: Purchase TV shows on Apple TV. Shows purchased on Apple TV can be re-downloaded on other iOS devices. Shows purchased on other iOS devices or with iTunes automatically show up as available to play on Apple TV. ?- Vimeo: Browse and watch millions of user-uploaded videos found on the Vimeo service, for free.”

All in all, this is another nice addition to the iCloud feature set, and we’re hoping it’s just a sign of more to come.
