iPhone 7 Unboxing & Hands-On

The iPhone 7 has hit store shelves, front porches, and people’s hands today. I picked up one of the iPhone 7’s in the form of the 32GB Matte Black version. It’s the tradition to do a full unboxing of Apple’s latest smartphone to go over what’s new, and try out some new apps and iOS changes. The matte black instantly stands out with such a dark rugged feel that is still clean and polished for an understated slickness.

The new home button offers three choices of differing degrees of taptic feedback to choose from. The iPhone 7 home button seems to be quicker, and more responsive than the previous button. I upgraded from the iPhone 6, so got to expereince 3D Touch for the first time, and it takes a bit to get used to on just how much force you need to apply versus a long press. Oz: Broken Kingdom was shown off during the iPhone 7 event, so I had to install it. I ran it head to head against an iPad Air 2, and it was tough to tell the difference in graphical fidelity. The lack of a headphone jack isn’t as important to me as I have used Bluetooth headphones with my iPhone 6 the entire time, but your mileage may vary. The included dongle from lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack is as you would expect, but the lightning EarPods can only work with iOS devices. The new surround sound speaker is tough to convey when being recorded, but it’s a noticeable improvement for music and games.
