There’s just something about small flightless birds, that want to fly, that intrigue App Store shoppers. First came Angry Birds, then Tiny Wings, and now Air Penguin. The game is as straightforward as can be, yet it still offers plenty of challenges. Your goal is to tilt to control a penguin, and try to guide it between ice flows. Along the way you want to collect fish, and avoid sea creatures.

Possibly, the best aspect of the game is the campaign mode, which gives you 75 levels of varying objectives. The penguin is crossing the Arctic ice flows to save its children. It needs to pass by sharks, octopi, and swordfish while using the aid of turtles and whales. There is an endless survival mode as well, and it seems the essential style for the gameplay.

Speaking of style, the game design is superb giving you cute characters and plenty of polish. Air Penguin really crosses borders between iOS users to provide wide appeal. Not only that, but once you begin it’s tough to stop playing with the excellent level setup. Each level is short and sweet to power through, or keep playing until you finally beat a particular level. The difficulty curve is subtle, and well designed to keep everyone challenged throughout the campaign.

Game Center is included for online high scores and achievements to add a little more incentive to keep playing. There are also in game purchases using your collected fish, to help you with difficult levels. You can also use actual money to buy some more of the fish currency to give you an extra bounce, or hamper some of the sea creature enemies.

Air Penguin is a great little pick-up that will keep you coming back enough times to make it well worth the purchase price.
