Outstanding physics engine for varying gravity | Freshens the series | Even greater polish

Only 60 levels at launch | IAP for an additional level pack | Three stars are much tougher

Angry Birds have practically taken over the earth with games on every platform, merchandise in tons of stores, and even a planned amusement park. The furious fowl have now left their terrestrial trappings, and ventured out into space. Angry Birds Space is the newest game in the series, and it provides 60 brand new levels all infused with new space physics revolving around varying gravitational pull. The familiar birds return with space outfits, and there’s also a new ice bird which can freeze blocks to make them easier to break through.

The original, Seasons, and Rio seemed to provide every type of level you could imagine, and the genre really needed a change of pace. Jumping into space is the perfect change of pace and it’s a similar route that Mario took to freshen up the classic platformer. The new space levels in Angry Birds have elements of Super Mario Galaxy as you use each planet’s gravitational pull to slingshot the birds in all new ways. You’re playing with an all new physics engine that is absolutely superb, and provides plenty of variation if you’ve gotten tired of all of the existing Angry Birds levels.

It’s just great to curve a bird around one planet to reach the pigs on the next planet, or knock into asteroids to rain down on the pigs, or sling into zero gravity and cause chain reactions. Each level provides different elements to use to get the pigs whether they have space suits or are on a planet. Overall, the gameplay is simply phenomenal that once you get going, it will be tough to put down. The levels are also much more challenging to get three stars, and this is coming from someone who’s gotten three stars on every level across all three games through all of the updates. The main drawback is that you blast through the levels relatively quickly, and there are only 60 at launch. Also, there’s a special Danger Zone level pack with 30 additional levels, but it is an extra $0.99 in-app purchase.

Angry Birds Space ($0.99, iPhone / $2.99, iPad) livens up the tired genre, and provides such an engaging iOS experience that shouldn’t be missed. The space gameplay elements are the perfect addition, and the new gravity altering physics engine is spot on, and is the main factor making the game so good. Angry Birds Space is a must buy that will pull you in, and won’t let go until you blast through the initial set of levels.
