All new way to bowl | Focused challenges | Classic style included

Tough to get edge pin precision | Could use more challenges | Simple pin physics

We have seen numerous bowling games on iOS, and most offer the same formulas. Bowling Central is a new style bowling game in the App Store that introduces unique challenges. It’s tough enough to try to bowl strikes, and spares, and yet Bowling Central takes the challenge up a notch with obstacles on the lane. There are boxes, blockades, and other items, and the best part is that they’re not simply stationary, but instead move in different ways. Some rise and fall, others go up and down, and then there’s a combination of moving obstacles.
Bowling Central features 30 different challenges to play that offer a level set-up for bowling. Each challenge gives you a target score, and just three frames to reach it. There’s a continuous supply of new obstacles to face as you face each new challenge. In addition to the levels, you can always play classic bowling in the usual ten frame variety with an option for six, or three frames. No matter how you choose to play, it’s all effortless to control with smooth swipe controls to roll the ball down the lane. The game does a good job of picking up on straight, hook, or curved shots, all of which are important to counteract the obstacles. All of the action is presented with a well done 3D graphics engine, and while the pin physics are good, they’re a little simplistic.

The emphasis of Bowling Central is the new challenge that you face, and the game definitely shines by giving you a new game of bowling. It would be nice to see more than 30 challenges since they’re of the three frame variety. It’s still fun to have a new way to bowl that will at times frustrate you, but that just makes successful shots that much more rewarding. One problem is that it’s tough to get the pins in the corners as the controls don’t offer the most precision around the edges. One creative counterpoint is the inclusion of a special AirPlay Mirroring mode to play with your iPhone as though it’s Wii Bowling of flicking your iPhone forward. There are a few drawbacks, but Bowling Central delivers an enjoyable take on bowling.

Bowling Central ($2.99, Universal) offers a compelling new style of bowling that is worth picking up for the purchase price.
