Puzzles don't require much thought | Gameplay is a little bland at times

There are tons of quick action arcade games in the App Store that can get your heart rate up. Breath of Light is not one of them, and instead is on the opposite end of the spectrum as it focuses on creating a Zen like experience. Your goal is simply to guide the flow of energy from the starting point through the various flowers on screen. You direct the energy, you move rocks, barriers, and other special objects to change the flow of energy. It’s easy to see the Zen Garden and Koi pond inspiration for this game.
Breath of Light doesn’t have timers, intense difficulty curves, or multiple complex game modes. Everything is designed with Zen in mind to let your mind be fully immersed in the creation at hand. The puzzles are contemplative to let you subtly move the rocks around the screen, and see how the flow of energy reacts to your movements. Everything is presented with a minimalistic style that looks beautiful on a retina display with the energy flow set on top of distinct monochromatic backgrounds. The visuals are accented by a meditative soundtrack that fits in well with the overall theme of the game.

Everything in Breath of Light shares a similar design goal, and it’s easy to get lost in the style going from level to level. With such an emphasis on Zen, the puzzle components do come up lacking a little bit. There’s nothing truly challenging, or mind bending leaving some of the levels rather bland. The core concepts have also been done before, and resemble the light bending puzzle style. It’s understood that the game is about relaxation more than an intense challenge, but it would be nice to think about the solution from time to time. Breath of Light boils down more to an interactive Zen experience than a true puzzle game, but that doesn’t stop it from being engaging.

Breath of Light ($2.99, Universal) delivers an immersive Zen experience making it one to pick up.
