Mickey Mouse the action star? Apparently, with the release of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse on iOS. It’s a re-imagining of the classic Sega Genesis title infused with Mickey as he needs make his way through the evil witch Mizrabel’s castle in an attempt to save Minnie. Since, it’s a Castle of Illusion there are five detailed worlds that have outlandish themes whether it’s a haunted forest, water filled desert, lively toy land, living library, and more. The entire game delivers deluxe 3D worlds as the backdrop for a platformer adventure that is on a scale rarely seen on iOS.
Each level is divided into three acts, and infused with classic platforming elements, as you hop between platforms, bounce on enemy’s heads, and collect diamonds scattered about. There are also the occasional action sequences of out-running a rolling object, and the third act is always a lengthy boss battle. To add to the depth, there are also extra sequences in each world that are special challenges that add fast paced platforming to reach a particular end, and failure just sends you back to the normal world. There’s a whole lot of variety to explore all of the different illusions involved, and everything expands from well designed beginnings. The graphics engine is well done, there’s quality voice work to narrate the adventure, and there are a lot of little things to appreciate.
One of the best compliments to give Castle of Illusions is that there’s a set-up reminiscent of Super Mario 64 as you move through the castle to access different rooms as the gateways to each world. There’s just such an involved adventure to take part in, and once you start, you just want to keep exploring all of the nuances. The inclusion of Mickey Mouse makes the game extra endearing, and opens up the potential audience to experience such well designed platformer gameplay. All of the action is controlled by familiar virtual controls that get out of the way to let you focus on the challenge at hand. There’s also a surprising amount of difficulty included, as at first glance you would think the gameplay would be watered down to be made for younger audiences. That is definitely not the case, so you need to be prepared for a challenging platformer that doesn’t have many contemporaries in the App Store.
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse ($9.99, Universal) is a stand out on iOS that proves Mickey can be an action hero in one highly entertaining platforming adventure that is a must buy.
