Apps can do so many things to excite, entertain, and provide enjoyment. Contre Jour is a new app that we saw back at E3, and have been excited about since then. I refer to Contre Jour as an app instead of just a game because it delivers an entire immersive experience. Contre Jour is the newest physics puzzler with the three star scoring system from Chillingo to follow in the great footsteps of Angry Birds, Cut The Rope, and Feed Me Oil. All three games have been the number one paid app in the App Store at one time or another, and Contre Jour has all the makings to be the next.

The first thing you notice about Contre Jour is the beautifully contrasting visual style of light and dark that is reminiscent of all the allure of Limbo, World of Goo, and Feed Me Oil. Your goal is to move Petit, a one eyed rolling ball from start to finish. The thing is that you never control Petit, and instead you control the surroundings. You drag your finger to rise and drop the platforms, and drag the tentacles to latch on to Petit and swing it around. The gameplay takes elements from a few games, and you can feel the swinging object similarities to Cut The Rope, and land movement in Bumpy Road.

Contre Jour is collectively unique, and makes a very challenging and still enjoyable physics puzzle game. Each level offers a unique layout and assortment of objects which make you think while still providing action and requiring you to perform skillfully. There are three chapters of 20 levels each, and there are three light orbs to collect in each level to add to the replay factor. As you advance you come across new elements including slingshots, blowers, and portals to open up all new puzzle styles to solve. The gameplay is simply extraordinary, and it will keep you coming back time and time again.

If that wasn’t enough there is an amazing soundtrack to fit the stark visual style. The app is a work of immersive art as you’re transfixed by the beauty on screen, and sink into the complexities of the seemingly subtle soundtrack. Also included are living creepy elements in the background very similar to World of Goo, but still feeling different. All of this surrounds such engaging gameplay that has you touching all over the screen, and interacting with all parts of the environment.

Contre Jour ($0.99, iPhone / $2.99 HD) is one of the most amazing iOS experiences regardless of category. The game follows great Chillingo physics puzzlers like Angry Birds, Cut The Rope, and Feed Me Oil and is easily the best of the bunch. Contre Jour is an absolute must buy for every iOS device owner which you just won’t be able to get enough of.
