4.0 Overall Score

Brilliantly builds on the past | Doubles the action | Feels fresh | Same great design

Could aways use more levels | Not ground breaking

Cut The Rope has become an App Store phenomena that has grown its presence outside of the App Store. ZeptoLab has a hit on its hands, and as the saying goes, “don’t mess with success”. In that vein, comes Cut The Rope: Time Travel which is a brand new variation of the popular franchise following up Experiments. Unlike Experiments, Time Travel isn’t just more levels of the same thing, but instead offers one fundamental difference. Each level now presents two candies, and two Om Noms to feed, with one dressed in the specific time period attire. The time travel theme is infused into every aspect of the game with levels associated to the middle ages, renaissance, pirates, ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and the stone age.
There are six level packs of 15 levels each to keep you traveling through time across the 90 levels. Each level combines aspects of the past versions of Cut The Rope with new twists tied to the particular theme. For instance, bubbles, air blowers, rockets, spikes, and of course rope returns. Now though, there are chains, spinning blades, the ability to freeze time, bombs, and more with the best aspect being the combination of multiple obstacles as you go. The familiar aspects remain so you’re prepared to handle the new elements, which change up the overall gameplay considerably.

The biggest difference is having two Om Noms to feed as it multiplies the overall challenge with all new intricacies. Some levels have the candies collide, while others tie the movement of the candies together, and there are many other variations as you try to manipulate the level to get two candies through all the dangers. You’re essentially doubling the action while maintaining what made the original so good to deliver fresh action puzzles. All of it is delivered skillfully as you would expect from ZeptoLab, and there’s so much personality packed into the time period themed Om Noms, as well as the level backgrounds.

Cut The Rope: Time Travel ($0.99, iPhone / $2.99, iPad) builds upon a great base to deliver some exquisite touchable fun that is a should buy. The game might not be ground breaking, but it’s still plenty entertaining as you travel through the six included time periods.
