We’ve all played racing games before, but they only give you so much to do. Death Rally changes it up by giving you weaponry on your vehicle. Now you can choose to speed past or blast away your opponents. Remedy Games has renovated the classic arcade game from 1996 with all new visuals, and a touch screen interface. The game design looks amazing on the iPad 2 and Retina display. The control scheme is as simple as can be with a digital joystick to steer, and one button to fire your weapon.

Death Rally gives you a top down perspective of the race, similar to Reckless Racing, but with much finer graphics and controls. While you’re blowing up enemies, you will be blown away by nearly every aspect of the game. There is simply an overload of action in every single race. It’s a sprint to the finish with short tracks and only three laps, with destruction as the primary objective of every racer. Rather than being the first to the finish line, you may just be the last one standing.

There is never a dull moment in the game as you screech around turns firing at opponents up ahead, and avoiding enemies from behind. The tracks are full of sharp turns, and just making it through the course without getting stuck is an accomplishment in its own right. The action has the potential to keep you hooked to play for hours on end.

On top of the hectic racing, there is an excellent upgrade system with multiple cars and weaponry. It seems like you can just keep upgrading something, and every race contributes to your fame meter. If that wasn’t enough to keep you playing, Game Center is included for online high scores and achievements. No other game for iOS has more action with all of it rendered so smoothly.

The one problem is there are only a few tracks that you replay over and over. To upgrade all your equipment you will end up playing the same tracks about 50 times each. Granted, along the way the tracks have special challenges including racing in reverse or using a particular vehicle.

Death Rally is just one game, but it improves the entire game catalog of the App Store. Death Rally is a must buy for only $2.99, especially if you love action.
