Square Enix has a hit series for mobile devices in the form of their “Go” versions of their popular franchises. Hitman Go and Lara Croft Go both deliver engaging puzzle challenges that fit their respective themes. Now, there’s Deus Ex Go with a similar turn based puzzle style, but you get to play as Adam Jensen. The Deus Ex installment takes cues from the first two in the series, but introduces Deus Ex specific elements allowing you to use augmentations, hacking, and combat to uncover a terrorist plot.

Deus Ex Go features more of a storyline than either of the first two offering extra incentive to continue through the more than 50 levels in the story mode. There’s a string to follow from level to level similar to Lara Croft Go, but with full Deus Ex themes. The world is presented with the clean 3D lines of the predecessors, but now with futuristic twists. The real highlight of Deus Ex Go are the new abilities like activating an invisibility cloak to sneak past guards. You can also hack the building infrastructure to interact with special tiles to activate pathways, take control of turrets, change pathway directions, and more. In hacking mode, you even have a path drawing puzzle game as elements can block the path you draw, and paths can’t overlap. The new abilities build upon the familiar swipe to move from point to point on the level grid. The fresh elements introduce all new challenge to keep the difficulty up.

Deus Ex Go isn’t going to win innovation awards, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t stand on its own. The main detractor from Deus Ex Go is that it’s another in the Go series, but that doesn’t seem like a bad thing. The series continues to sprinkle in new structural and puzzle elements to contend with, while providing all new scenarios and scenes. The Deus Ex universe delivers a great backdrop to the turn based puzzle style. The mechanic itself is just as engaging, and it’s easy to get into the flow of going level to level. Deus Ex Go may be the most challenging installment yet with great level design that really requires some thinking as you need to interact with multiple elements on your way to the level exit. As an added bonus, the game also features a new daily level for added challenge to check back to.

Deus Ex Go ($4.99, Universal) is simply a thoroughly engaging puzzle challenge that stands on its own, and does the series proud to deliver more of a great stye with quality augmentations.
