Flight Control was an original App Store hit, and it created a whole genre in path drawing way back in May of 2009. Now, Firemint has released a follow up known as Flight Control Rocket, which takes the aircraft management game to space. The ships fly in from the sides of the screen, and you need to draw their path to and on to your mothership based on their color. There are a number of differences with the rocket version beginning with 15 different ship types with special abilities including splitting, drone dropping, snaking, and docking ship among others.
You also have three lives at your disposal allowing you to make a couple of mistakes, and yet keep the action going. There are multiple stages to play which are unlocked from the coins you earn in game, or can buy with optional in-app purchases. The main difference though is the gameplay pacing which is much improved for a more engaging experience with a constant flow of action. The original is a bit slow without the fast forward button, but Rocket has great ship speed, and each ship picks up the pace once you draw the path to land.
The variability of the ship types combined with the differing waves in each stage keeps the challenge up and game fresh. There are also robots to collect that add special abilities to your mothership, and everything is tied to the coins you can earn, a bit like Jetpack Joyride. There is so much incentive to keep you playing, although the coins can feel limiting at times. It really feels like a whole new experience as Firemint has improved on every aspect of the outstanding original. A lot has changed in the App Store since 2009, and Flight Control Rocket has applied the best changes, and still fits iOS so well.
Flight Control Rocket ($0.99, Universal) perfectly refreshes a classic, and makes for a very engaging and enjoyable iOS experience. The pacing is the ultimate highlight, and there are so many fresh aspects to keep you playing the game. Flight Control Rocket is a must buy that truly delivers a wonderful space journey.
