Grand Theft Auto has always been a ground breaking series, and now on the 10 year anniversary of Grand Theft Auto 3, it’s breaking ground on iOS. Grand Theft Auto 3 was the first 3D layout of the game, and the expansive Liberty City is now available to run and drive around in on your iPhone and iPad. There have been other similar games including Rockstar’s own Chinatown Wars and Gameloft’s Gangstar series, but they don’t compare to the full PS2 GTA 3. The dark open world game is now available on mobile devices, and it lets you jack cars, drive wherever you want, and collect guns.
The game itself isn’t new, but that doesn’t mean it’s still not enjoyable as you complete missions related to the dark underbelly of society. You can choose to follow the guided path of missions, or simply go exploring in Liberty City. There’s so much to see and do as you collect weapons, get in firefights, and avoid the cops. There’s so much time you can spend with the game, and you can end up sinking hours into the game. The game makes the transfer to iOS relatively well, especially with the graphics which aren’t the best on iOS, but do look better than the original.
The controls though are another story because there’s just so many virtual buttons on screen. It can be especially cramped on the iPhone/iPod touch, and it’s always disappointing to just see developers cram virtual buttons in. The controls are manageable for most of the game, but when action gets heavy they do get in the way. The overall experience improves the game catalog of the App Store, and iOS is better because if its availability.
Grand Theft Auto 3 ($4.99, Universal) is a should buy that is definitely a great gaming experience that iOS owners can finally enjoy.
