Imagine hacky sack, but with a cat. If you can picture that, then you get the crazy idea behind Hackycat. It’s a humorous idea to act as the inviting premise of a high score based fast paced arcade game. The game is more juggling than hacky sack as multiple cats are bouncing around on screen, and your goal is to keep them in the air for as long as possible. You begin with one cat, and new cats rain down from above every so often, and then you just have to tap on the cats before they hit the ground.
Keeping the hackycats in the air creates some hectic eclectic action that is even more intense than balancing spinning plates. While you’re kicking the cats, you can set-up combos with consecutive kicks or kicking multiple cats at once, and everything you do is about boosting your score. It wouldn’t be a cat game without cheezburgers and a group of them pop up from time to time which you try to collect to build-up your superkick. The superkick is so powerful it can launch the cats up into space, and it comes in quite handy to manage the number of cats on screen.
It wouldn’t be a high score game without plenty of unlockables, and there sure are lots in Hackycat. There are 34 different mini-goals to shoot for, three at a time, and there are three different locations and athletes to unlock. There are power-ups as well, and even a hardcore mode for even more challenge. The biggest unlockable component is the collection of cats with two dozen different cats with unique styles and special bonuses. The art style has an endearing quality with such cute cats, and humorous animations to round out the extremely creative and amusing experience.
Hackycat ($0.99, Universal) is more fun than a barrel full of monkeys, because it’s a sky full of cute cats that you need to frantically juggle with the pinpoint touch controls. Hackycat is a should buy that delivers some great entertainment in more ways than one.
