3.5 Overall Score
Gameplay: 3.5/5

Action packed combat | Deluxe DC catalog | Great 3D graphics | Optional IAP

A bit repetitive | Not the most complex game | Online multiplayer would be great

Superheroes make for some action packed comics, movies, TV shows, and of course games. Normally superheroes are battling against villains, with each other, and very rarely against one another. Injustice: Gods Among Us is an upcoming console game that launches later this month that pits superheroes and super villains against one another in epic battles. A brand new mobile version was released today allowing you to get in on the super combat action today on your iOS device. Injustice connects to the DC Comics catalog which means you have Superman, Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and their accompanying villains included in the game.

Injustice on iOS comes from the makers of Batman Arkham City Lockdown, and is reminiscent of Infinity Blade, and Avengers Initiative. The game features face to face combat with various taps, and swipes used for attacks, blocks, and special moves. The best aspect is that there’s constant flow, and action rather than waves of attacks just like the classic Street Fighter games, but made for the present day. Speaking of Street Fighter, the game also has ties to Marvel vs. Capcom in terms of the 3 on 3 battles allowing you to switch out characters mid-battle. The developers have done an excellent job in making the fighting genre accessible to anyone by cutting out virtual controls, and focusing on familiar touch ideas.

The combat system is built upon a collectible card game allowing you to pick-up, and upgrade the DC characters in digital card form. The game is begging for online multiplayer, but just includes a single player campaign that is plenty deluxe by itself. There are six stages composed of eight levels each with a major boss battle in each stage, and a bonus hidden gauntlet. The gameplay might not be the most thought provoking or particularly intricate, but it’s still plenty of fun to bash super heroes and villains with your own super heroes and villains. It’s also outstanding to watch with such a detailed 3D graphics engine, and brilliant character models for the DC characters you know so well. The combat animations are also top notch, highlighted by the special abilities of unleashing massive attacks tied to what each character is known for. Every fight helps you upgrade your characters, and earn coins, and you can use those coins to unlock new cards, or upgrade your existing ones.

Injustice is free to play with in-app purchases, and in this case, they’re surprisingly optional. The game includes the usual freemium trappings of an energy meter, coin driven upgrades, and purchasable cards, but they all feel optional. I got The Flash, Green Lantern, and Sinestro to start, and unlocked Nightning and Catwoman along the way of battling through the entire first stage without ever thinking it was free to play. You can be impatient to get Superman off the bat if you want, or play straight through for four hours, but that’s the only potential to spend on IAP. There’s so much to enjoy, and you get to dive into the over the top combat for free.

Injustice: Gods Among Us (Free, Universal) is fast paced fun that delivers some of the best combat on iOS that you will thoroughly enjoy spending time with.
