Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery – A Big Challenge

4.0 Overall Score
Gameplay: 4/5
Design: 4.5/5
Duration: 4/5

Deceptively tricky puzzles | Engaging storyline | Well designed experience

A bit slow moving at times | Leaves us waiting for episode two, which isn't available

Big foot is usually reserved for myth or legend, but don’t tell that to Jacob Jones. He has stumbled upon one during summer camp, and now he has to keep the big foot hidden while helping him discover what happened to his mother. That sets the stage for Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery : Episode 1, which is a 3D puzzle adventure, and a five part series. Just episode one is available, and it provides about two hours of play time with the story and puzzles. The entire adventure is presented with the Unreal Engine providing deluxe 3D visuals and environments that offer a paper craft style. The entire world is oozing with charm and polish highlighted by the creativity in the character design including Jacob toting a bear headed hooded sweatshirt.
The main highlight of the game is the pacing that keeps you constantly entertained and moving forward. There’s a very nice flow of switching between the story and various puzzles, and each puzzle fits in nicely. The story itself is plenty engaging, and at times it feels like a very well made interactive story. Then, you’re presented with familiar puzzle mechanics, which are deceptively tricky to the point that you can be stumped whether it’s block sliding, tangram, object arrangement, and more. All told, there are 25 main events, and 25 puzzles to make it through in the first episode with not every puzzle required to reach the ending. The two hours it takes are filled with enjoyment, and it’s one entertaining experience that keeps you traveling right along with Jacob Jones.

The overall experience is a definite stand out on the iOS platform whether it’s the puzzle layouts, visual design, or story. They all play off of each other, and there’s high quality voice work for every line of the lengthy dialogue to round out the total package. There’s a surprising amount of humor as well, and it’s just a new age puzzle adventure. The game is also made with iOS in mind with smooth touch controls to interact with the world, and each puzzle. Also, even though the puzzles can be quite challenging, there are three levels of hints that can be accessed just by finding hidden soda cans in the environments.

Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery : Episode 1 ($0.99, Universal) is a thoroughly entertaining all around experience that is a should buy, and will leave you anxiously anticipating Episode 2.
