The performing arts are best known when they’re actually performing in the theater whether it’s a piano concerto, a ballet performance, or a play. Juilliard Open Studios is a new app that focuses on all that goes on before the various performing arts reach the stage and start performing. The app comes from TouchPress, the creators of The ElementsThe Elements in Action, The PyramidsLeonardo Da Vinci’s AnatomyBeethoven’s 9th SymphonyDisney Animation, and Molecules, and offers a similar theme and high quality design. Juilliard Open Studios offers seven different video sessions to embark on, and you get to choose one entire interactive episode for free.

Each episode is composed of multiple segments that show the progression to reaching performance worthy abilities. For example, the classical music episode begins with an instructor narrative followed by an in the studio session with a student that leads to an on stage performance. Each chapter is a video session that you can scroll through with the option to have commentary, and even the score shown on screen. The videos are concluded with a text based description of the specific musical score, and is accented with short video clips describing particular sections.

There’s a lot to dive into, and each video is of superb quality as though you’re watching a documentary on PBS. It’s great to see the inside story of all that goes into a given performance, and actually witness the progression. The interactive tools bring the video to life to make it a much more engaging session to let you see insights in addition to the video and narration. Each episode is completely unique with different arts, tutors, and interactive features. As stated earlier, it’s completely free to enjoy one episode, and then it costs $7.99 per month to unlock everything with the other six episodes available at launch. It’s unknown how many new episodes will come on a daily basis, and that does cause a bit of hesitation.

Juilliard Open Studios (Free, Universal) offers great insight to performing arts with high production values for both the videos and interactive elements making it worth checking out.
