King of Thieves – Will It Steal Your Time?

4.0 Overall Score
Gameplay: 4/5
Design: 4/5

Fast paced fun to steal from others | Great multiplayer components | Full single player too

The keys can be a frustrating barrier | Platformer is a bit simple with tedious timing

Can you become the King of Thieves in the latest game from the makers of Cut The Rope? Your goal is to steal gold and gems from other players, and then protect your spoils. King of Thieves combines elements of platformers, tower defense, and Clash of Clans to give you a relatively unique iOS challenge. The platformer component is the heart of the game, in which you simply tap to dodge over a series of obstacles in an attempt to reach the gold at the end. There’s a lengthy single player campaign with 80 short form platformer levels to hop through, akin to Run Roo Run.
In addition to the single player, you can also invade anyone else’s dungeon to try to rob their gold. Not only can you steal others’ gold, but they can steal yours, which brings the tower defense style into play. You can place various obstacles in to your own dungeon to make it as tough as possible for opponents to steal from you. As you advance through the single player campaign, you can unlock new dungeons with a greater assortment of traps to protect your growing pile of gold and gems. Each dungeon presents a unique platformer challenge, and you can gain ideas for your own protection when you face particularly challenging enemy layouts.

There are a ton of online connectivity features in King of Thieves beginning with the smooth asynchronous online multiplayer. The game does a great job of balancing players, so that all of the thievery is matched up to the player’s skill level. It’s great to watch replays of other player’s attempts at your dungeon, which can show where to fortify, so the next person doesn’t have it as easy. The game also features a guild system with a set of leaderboards to conquer and advance through based on the power of your gems. You can constantly upgrade your gems, and each enemy that you steal from can help you gain new gems.
King of Thieves includes a lot of great features that are finely tuned together to build upon the core concept. Through it all, it’s simply fun to have the Clash of Clans style set-up, but with quick action platformer levels. King of Thieves delivers more entertainment than simply building units, and then tapping them into place. Also, you get to play both sides with the timing based platformer, and tower defense style protection. King of Thieves is free to play, though it’s relatively friendly when it comes to upgrades, wait times, and earning of the paid currency. You can easily fully enjoy the game for free, and the only thing that gets in the way is keys. Each dungeon that you go into has a few key holes to try to unlock the door, and you have a limited number of keys. You will run out of keys, which can hamper the gameplay flow, but you can always watch video ads, or replenish keys with the premium currency.

King of Thieves (Free, Universal) is a well designed multiplayer challenge which will keep you coming back and is definitely a steal of a deal for the entertainment value for free.
