LEGO The Lord Of The Rings – A Worthy Fellowship

4.5 Overall Score
Gameplay: 4.5/5
Design: 4/5
Duration: 4.5/5

Intricate design work | Covers the three full length films | Made for touch

Similar to the other LEGO games on iOS | A bit too simple at times

The Lord of the Rings is an absolute classic by J.R.R. Tolkein, and Peter Jacksons’ film adaptations are becoming classics in their own right. Now, there’s LEGO’s take on The Lord of the Rings, and it has officially come to iOS. It’s the complete version from other platforms, but made for touch, and one distinct experience. LEGO Harry Potter and Batman DC Super Heroes have already come to iOS, and The Lord of the Rings variation isn’t all that different. There’s the obvious unique theme, but the gameplay isn’t very different, and is more of an iterative new release that is based upon the past. Of course, The Lord of the Rings source material is outstanding, and the unique storyline creates a completely different experience.
LEGO LOTR follows the three films, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, but infused with the unique LEGO style. That means the well known characters are in LEGO form, and there’s plenty of humor infused into the familiar storyline. Things play out the same as in the films, but you get to play to unveil the story, and there are nice little extras to discover. Whether you’re exploring the LEGO crafted LOTR world, or watching the highly detailed animated cut scenes, you’re in for a treat. There’s so much style and personality that goes into every part of the game, and there’s an extensive adventure to play through. There are over 90 unlockable characters, and you get to play through the entire storyline from three different films for a whole lot of playtime.

The actual gameplay delivers a puzzle adventure as you need to figure out the path forward by destroying certain objects to then form new LEGO creations. There are also various interactive items in the environment, and each character in the fellowship has their own abilities whether it’s Frodo, Sam, Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn, Gandalf, etc. It’s easy to switch characters based on the setting, and every puzzle requires you to constantly find the best character. There are also action sequences for various battles with some of the unique enemies that you will come across that require quick combat. The one consistency is that there’s quite a bit of variability across the entire game so that there are familiar mechanics, but unique twists that require at least a little thought.
All of the action is controlled with either a casual touch interface with direct tap interactions, or classic virtual controls. The virtual controls allow for more precision in the action sequences, but either way it’s effortless to manage the game. Every part is designed to keep you coming back, and it’s one such game that you will want to finish after you start. There are hours of enjoyment, and again this is the full version from console/PC, which is at considerable discount on iOS, and it’s not just a simple direct port. Fans of LEGO, Lord of the Rings, or just deluxe iOS games will absolutely love the experience with so much involved from start to finish.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings ($4.99, Universal) is a must buy that truly delivers an immersive, and memorable iOS experience that is engaging throughout its lengthy adventure.
