Platformer games haven’t really taken off on iOS with the truly best stand-outs a few years old at this point with Rolando 2, Dark Nebula 2, Mikey Shorts, Cordy 2, and a few others. Platformers are some of the most influential video games in history with the likes of various Mario & Sonic games, and iOS is still having a tough time having a defining platformer. Leo’s Fortune is stepping up to the plate, and the first thing you notice is an absolutely gorgeous design that offers quite an ornate level of detail to every varied world. You get to play as Leopold who has had his fortune stolen, and is setting out on an epic adventure in an attempt to recover it.
Leo’s Fortune is designed specifically for iOS, and it shows, with intuitive touch controls that allow for a high level of precision. A lot of care went into designing the game for touch, rather than relying on virtual controls, as you just slide a finger on the left side of the screen to move, or swipe up/down on the right side of the screen to jump, or smash. It all sets the stage for 19 levels across five worlds with each one offering quite a lengthy adventure in it own right, rather than quick bites. There are also five unlockable bonus levels, and each main level has three challenges with collectables, time, and deaths.
The ultimate highlight is the platformer gameplay that truly nails the classic elements, while infusing the style with all new twists. There are sequences that resemble games of the past, and then there are others that are unique to Leo’s Fortune. It’s simply amazing to have these ornately crafted levels at your fingertips as you leap across swaying blocks, circle around spinning blades, dodge wrecking balls, and more. You can execute all of the challenging maneuvers flawlessly, and there’s such a high level of variety from level to level. The game also brilliantly balances fast paced action sequences with straight puzzle objectives to switch around your brain from timing to thought, and back again. Each of the five main worlds has their own twists allowing you to dive down and spring back up in the sea, jump off crumbling platforms in the ruins, flip every which way in the mines, and much more.
There’s simply so much care that went into designing every single aspect of the game that it truly deserves being called flawless. I hesitate to use the term, but it’s such an amazing experience to partake in that offers everything you could want in a platformer on iOS. You can simply get lost in Leo’s Fortune with the absolutely gorgeous design, controls that melt into your fingers, and gameplay that is as enjoyable as they come in the App Store. It’s the type of game that you just don’t want to end, and the only real drawback is that there are 19 levels, and you just want more. Leopold is an amazing main character that is packed with personality, and charm from his teal puffball shape, oversized mustache, inflating jump ability, and great voice work. There’s also a little story line to round out the experience that much more, and it’s just icing on the cake that you can’t get enough of. It’s the total package that you will absolutely love every minute of, and there’s a silky smooth quality to every single aspect that you come across.
Leo’s Fortune ($4.99, Universal) takes iOS gaming up a notch in what could be called the best game on the platform that is an absolute must buy.
