If you like battling your way through bad guys, then you’ve come to the right place. Mage Gauntlet is a deluxe retro inspired action RPG that is reminiscent of classic Super Nintendo titles like Zelda. The game is from the makers of Hook Champ and Hook Worlds, and delivers the same 16 bit style retro graphics as seen in Hook Worlds. Mage Gauntlet gives you about 30 seconds of story, and introduction level, and then its time for non-stop action. You play as a young woman who has an odd affliction to magic, but still has plenty of power in her own right, just in a different form.

Unlike other RPGs in the App Store, there is no down time, slow progression, or any factors to prevent you from battling enemies. There are new groups of enemies around every turn, and it’s simply amazing to have so much action. The game keeps the pace at full swing, and provides a brilliant control scheme for effortless enjoyment. There are 42 levels in normal mode, and once you complete the story you unlock 42 more in master mode with even more enemies at once. You get to unlock items throughout to enhance your powers, and there is a straightforward leveling up system.

You have basic sword attacks, charged sword blast, magical spells, and a dash move at your disposal as you face all kinds of creatures. The game is all about having multiple enemies on screen at once, and trying to get rid of them all with mega attacks. The game provides an amusing storyline interspersed with the action, and once you pick it up, the game doesn’t let you go. It wouldn’t be a Rocketcat game without hats, and there are 110 of them to unlock, along with all of the powerful items.

Mage Gauntlet ($1.99, iPhone) puts the action in action RPG, and makes it one of the best, if not the best in the genre. Once you begin, you’ll want to get through every single enemy in the game, and you’ll enjoy every minute of it. The game perfectly embodies the past, while providing such a smooth experience for the iPhone/iPod Touch. The actions sequences can’t be praised enough because there are simply so many, though it does make the game a bit repetitive.

Mage Gauntlet is a should buy for the price that anyone can enjoy whether they reminisce about SNES RPGs, or have never even heard of the genre. The game is overloaded with action, personality, and most importantly fun that is the best of the genre in the App Store.
