Mahjong is such a classic game, and there are so many different versions in the App Store. Big Fish Games has one of the most popular online versions with Mahjong Towers Eternity, which is now Mahjong Towers Touch HD on the iPad. The game isn’t just a simple port either, but rather is made with touch, and the iPad in mind. As soon as you launch the game, you know you’re in for something special with a beautiful opening menu system. You’re given all 12 signs of the Chinese Zodiac, and you tap one for a slide out of all 15 puzzle layouts for each sign.

That means that there are 180 levels to play through, each with a unique and challenging layout. Once you start playing a puzzle, you see how every tile is so easy to tap, to make matching as smooth as can be. There is a really neat feature that lets you swipe your discard pile upwards to reveal your latest matches. You can then tap on one of the matches to undo back to that point, and it’s similar to restoring a Time Machine or Versions back-up on a Mac. In case you’re stuck in any level you’re given hints, and shuffles to help you through.

The game has an absolutely beautiful design that is highly polished, and is also mixed with a subtle soundtrack. There are 26 different tile sets you can choose from, and every single tile has such a unique design. The background of each level is a wood design of the Chinese zodiac you’re playing, to show the developers really thought of everything. Beyond the good looks, there is outstanding Mahjong gameplay with a combo system for making matches in quick succession. It would be nice to see a little more of a buffer before your combo ends, but that simply increases the challenge.

Mahjong Towers Touch (Free, iPad) just may be the very best Mahjong game in the App Store, and one of the better puzzle games overall. The game is free to download, and it allows you to play the first 15 levels in the Rat package. Then it’s just a $2.99 in-app purchase to unlock all 180 levels, and all the tile sets.

Mahjong Towers Touch HD is a should buy for $2.99, and if you give the free version try, you’ll probably pay to unlock the whole game.
