Minigore is an App Store classic, so it takes a heck of an effort to produce a sequel that can live up to the hype. Minigore 2: Zombies has plenty of hype in its own right, and after a lengthy development cycle John Gore is finally back in action. If you’re unfamiliar with the original, it’s a dual stick shooter that is all about action as a constant supply of furries of various sizes rush at you so the screen is always filled with enemies. Minigore 2: Zombies takes the same style, and upgrades it to a factor of ten for one of the most over the top action games on any platform.
The furries have been replaced by zombies, and the zombies come in all varieties with 60 enemy types to face. All of the characters from the original as well as a host of new ones are back in zombie form coming right at you in various sizes, including massive proportions. Some of the enemies can fire back at you, and the game can support up to 150 zombies on screen at once. The original Minigore was developed for the iPhone 3GS, and a lot has changed since then in terms of iOS hardware, and Minigore 2 takes full advantage.
The game is absolutely gorgeous with the same brilliant 3D art style taken up a notch thanks to the brilliant animations. The game features procedural animations, random zombie patterns, and cinematic lighting as well as deluxe killing animations including blood splatter, and severed heads. It’s simply amazing to see it all running silky smooth with over the top action at such a scale. The entire back engine for the game is brand new, and the actual content is as well. Rather than an endless game, there are seven different environments to unlock with each one featuring waves of major enemies until you reach the final boss. There are seven bosses in total to take down, and that’s after battling through tons of small enemies, and other big enemies along the way.
There’s a brand new upgrade system as well with eight types of weapons, and 10 upgrade slots for each weapon. There are also 10 upgrade slots for each of the eight unlockable characters, and it gives you all new goals to shoot for. Speaking of goals, the game features over 300 different challenges to complete to further the replay factor. One of the biggest additions to the gameplay is the new melee attack allowing you to use axes, swords, hammers, and more in close combat. All of your weapons also deplete ammo, so melee attacks are essential to survive. There are also beast, and companion power-ups to find, and all of it combines so that there is never a dull moment as you’re constantly fighting for your life through an overwhelming number of enemies.
The base gameplay is definitely repetitive, but the varied environments, different enemies, boss battles, missions, unlockables, and different attack methods never once let you think about the repetitive nature. The only thing more you could ask for is a co-op mode that builds upon the companion power-up with an online buddy instead. That’s asking for a bonus, as the package included is one of the best experiences on iOS that shouldn’t be missed if you’re even remotely interested in action.
Minigore 2: Zombies ($1.99, Universal) is the most action packed game in the App Store which is an exhilarating rush that is so engaging. It’s perfect to pick up and play for a few minutes, but has enough to provide hours of entertainment. The game is exceptionally well designed in every regard, and it’s amazing that it’s only $2. Minigore 2: Zombies is an absolute must buy that you will enjoy every second of for so many different reasons.
