Great 3D physics engine | Nice level variety | Consistent challenge with wide appeal

A few levels need precision that is a bit tedious | Levels are just pass or fail

There’s nothing quite like throwing an item at a stack of other items in an attempt to knock everything down. From milk jugs at the carnival to Boom Blox on the Wii, there have been a lot of ways to knock things down in a playful fashion. Boom Blox is particularly noteworthy due to its great physics engine, Wii motion controls, great level design, and Steven Spielberg name recognition. There have been a few attempts at bringing the Boom Blox style to iOS with Fish Heroes, Catapult King, Toy Story Smash It, and you could even argue Angry Birds is a 2D version of Boom Blox.

Monkeyrama is a brand new entry into the App Store with the 3D knock down style. In Monkeyrama, you toss monkeys at stacks of blocks in an attempt to knock every block off of the platform. There are 84 levels spread across three episodes, and each level has a score total to reach with each fallen block contributing to your score. One odd aspect is that levels are just pass or fail with no star scoring system. There are multiple monkey times that introduce bombs, stickiness, heftier power, and more. The highlight of Monkeyrama is the 3D physics engine so that every block reacts just as you would expect based on the type of monkey you throw, and the angle of impact. It’s great to interact with the game, and watch the stacks collapse with that properly placed throw with just the right monkey.

The puzzles in Monkeyrama deliver a nice degree of variety with some offering huge stacks, and others placing just a few blocks in spread out positions. There’s always a fresh challenge, which keeps you engaged to go from level to level to keep knocking down stacks of blocks. The game features a nice difficulty curve to keep the challenge consistent as you advance, and there’s also an optional bonus monkey system if you ever get stuck, and the system replenishes every 30 minutes. It’s easy to control Monkeyrama as you swipe to spin the camera, and simply tap to throw a monkey. All of the action is presented with a quality 3D design, and it all combines for tons of fun that has wide appeal.

Monkeyrama ($0.99, Universal) is a highly entertaining 3D physics challenge that is a must have iOS gaming experience.
