Health and fitness trackers with iOS connectivity are all the rage in 2013, but it seems you may not actually need an accessory after all. Moves is a new iPhone app that turns your iPhone into an intelligent pedometer to track all of your moves. The focus of the app is to automatically track what you do in the background to give you feedback to help spur you on to changing or continuing your habits. The app works in the background, and can track walking, running, and cycling, and automatically distinguishes between the three.
Moves counts the number of steps you take everyday, and gives you a total at the top that also shows miles, and time. The neatest feature may be the storyline which is a vertically scrolling list that shows your activity throughout the day with color coded tags for your type of movement connected to the time of the day. Also included are locations powered by Foursquare as well as transportation times shown when you’re not in motion. The storyline is taken a step further with the map view, since the app uses your iPhone’s GPS to not only track how and when you move, but also where.
The map view shows your route for the entire day, and it’s so great to see the map highlighted with routes in green and pink to show your exact walking or running path. The app tracks everywhere you go, so grey routes indicate when you were in transport in a car, train, plane, etc. One thing to note is that the app doesn’t fully rely on GPS, so when you have no service the location isn’t tracked. Moves provides all of the info beautifully displayed with a high degree of polish applied to the tracking orbs, and storyline. Not only does the app act as a daily tracker, but also culminates it for weekly and monthly totals allowing you to aim for new personal records. The feature set delivers all you could want from an activity tracker, and supplies the features that $150 accessories do like the Up, Fuelband, FitBit, etc.
Moves (Free, iPhone) is a seamless addition to your iPhone and lifestyle that tracks the way you move, and provides such valuable information on your movements. The only real drawback is that since Moves uses GPS, it does deplete battery, but that’s just part of the territory. Moves is an absolute must have app that shows you where you went today, and can inspire you to change where you go tomorrow.
