Mutant Storm – A Gauntlet Of Varying Enemies & Arenas

4.0 Overall Score
Gameplay: 4/5
Design: 4/5
Duration: 4/5

Jam packed with action | Plenty of variation | Nice checkpoints

First level set is very slow | Soundtrack is relatively annoying

It really seems like there’s some good action shooters being ported over from Xbox Live Arcade, with Radiangames’ Inferno+, Ballistic SE, and Fireball SE, and now Mutant Storm from Crescent Moon Games. It’s a top down shooter with 89 different arenas to battle through. It’s a unique set-up for a shooter, and it makes for an action packed experience simply because there’s a fixed area to maneuver through. You can see all of the action at once from the top down perspective, and the game looks absolutely gorgeous with retina iPad graphics that are bursting with neon color and outlandish design.

All of the action flows silky smooth at 60 frames per second, and it’s truly a sight to behold on the new iPad. It takes more than visuals to make a game, and Mutant Storm definitely delivers with arena based set-up with eight different difficulty levels. The adventure mode pits one room after another to battle through, and each one features a different layout, and unique enemies with varying design as well as strategy. To increase the action, every room has a timer so that you need to destroy all of the enemies in the time limit. It makes you speed up that much more, and there’s so much going on the screen at once, which only increases the potential for error.

The game is rather interesting in that it has to grow on me. The first set of levels definitely didn’t embody an action packed shooter, but as soon as I got into the second set, I was able to fully appreciate the game. Every level from there on out across the remaining eight level sets is packed with enemies, and it’s a race against the clock. There are checkpoints every 10 levels allowing you to resume at level 20 for example. The adventure mode pits one level after another, while tally mode gives you one level at a time to score as much as you can.

Mutant Storm ($2.99, iPad) is a visually impressive action packed experience that will keep you glued to your iPad making it a should buy.
