The App Store offers up such a wonderful way for relatively unknown game developers to let their creativity flow. Nihilumbra is a new adventure game for iOS following the likes of Waking Mars, LostWinds, Aquaria, and Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery. The game feels completely new for the iOS platform, or any platform for that matter, and revolves around escaping the void of nothingness. There’s an extremely deluxe existentialism storyline that unfolds across multiple hours of gameplay.
The game introduces a brand new game mechanic where you can paint different colors on screen to give your character different abilities. For instance, you can paint on blue ice to slide and jump further, or green moss to bounce higher, and orange sand for a sticky surface. You paint the colors with just a swipe of your finger, and as you progress and unlock more colors, the puzzle platformer elements become more in-depth. You will need to use multiple colors for certain sequences, especially as you face a wide range of distinct enemies made from the void. There are five different worlds to to travel through, and five accompanying colors.
Your character is just a black entity from the void, which is chasing it down to bring it back. As you advance through the worlds, the void eats everything in its path in it pursuit, and that ties into the existentialism storyline. There are questions of what counts as existence, and what costs there are for that life. The storyline is reminiscent of the very intriguing app, Strange Rain, and the gameplay makes you completely engaged in the story. The game is packed with content, and is set-up so that you will want to keep playing and enjoying all of it. The artwork is top notch as well, and the entire experience is refreshingly engrossing for an iOS game.
Nihilumbra ($2.99, Universal) is a must buy that is a true stand out on the platform, and one great experience at your fingertips.
