One Tap Hero – I Need A Hero In A Casual Platformer

3.5 Overall Score
Gameplay: 3.5/5
Design: 3.5/5

A new way to play a platformer | Nice balance of puzzle & action | Plenty of variety

A bit easy to begin with | Some dull stretches | Controls are a bit imprecise in quick sequences

I need a hero. I’m holding out for a hero ’til the end of the night. He’s gotta be strong, and he’s gotta be fast, and he’s gotta be fresh from the fight. One Tap Hero is ready for the call to save his damsel in distress by collecting stars to transform her back from a bear. The game applies the familiar one touch controls of casual endless games to the relatively complex genre of platformers. You can control all of the platforming action with a single action button that is context sensitive.

One Tap Hero is more of a puzzle platformer that anything else as each of the 80 levels offers a pattern to figure out. You will tap to jump, climb ladders, use transporters, and more while your character moves automatically. The game requires you to be precise with your movements, because your character can run right off screen if you don’t perform actions at the right moment. In each level, there’s one distinct way to solve it which offers the puzzle feel, and the solution requires action and timing to provide the platformer elements.

The levels do offer plenty of variation so that there’s a unique puzzle layout, and the entire game is reminiscent of Run Roo Run, but with more going on. There are more potential actions beyond jumping, because the levels have various mechanics, obstacles, and layouts at work. One Tap Hero is on the easy side to begin with, but new elements keep it fresh, and increase the challenge subtly. It would be nice to see a little more challenge, but the levels offer some replay as you aim for three stars. The one button control is also a little imprecise in sequences that require a quick succession of jumping. The graphics are simple, but nice, and there are unlockable costumes for your character.

One Tap Hero ($0.99, Universal) is a well designed puzzle platformer that is designed for touch and a casual audience. There is enough variation and replay to go with the puzzle layouts to keep you playing through all of the included levels. One Tap Hero is worth picking up, and a whole new way to play a platformer.
