Great design | Wonderful interactive features for a quality learning experience

Not that long of a story | A little bland

The iPad was made to be an interactive book reading tool that can especially help little ones learn to read. Oceanhouse Media has done a great job in bringing a number of Children’s books to the iPad including many of the Dr. Seuss collection. Now they have worked with the Smithsonian Oceanic Collection to provide Penguin’s Family: The Story of a Humboldt Penguin. The story presents the early life of a Humboldt Penguin from egg up until it can care for itself.

The app is a great learning experience for simply reading and information about penguins. The omBook does a great job of providing beautiful illustrations, and easily manageable text that comes in short bursts. There are three options to read the story with read to me, read myself, or auto play. You can read the story, hear the narration, and even hear and watch the entire tale like a video. You can also tap on any object in the illustrations to hear the item spoken aloud, and see it highlighted in the text.

Penguin’s Family – Smithsonian Oceanic Collection ($1.99, Universal) isn’t the longest story, but it’s a great learning experience. If you have young kids around, Penguin’s Family works on multiple levels to offer learning, interaction, and beautiful images. Penguin’s Family is worth picking up if you can use the app with anyone who’s learning to read.
