There’s nothing quite like retro arcade games along the lines of Pac-Man, Galaga, Dig-Dug, Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Rally-X, Space Invaders, Tetris, Frogger, and so many more. There are some nice retro arcade titles on the App Store, including plenty of space shooters along the lines of Galaga. Plasma-Sky is the latest, and it may be the best yet as it really nails the essence of Galaga, while delivering brand new challenge, and style. You control your ship at the bottom of the screen, and enemy ships fly in from above, and you need to blast them all away. The difference from the arcade classic is that your ship has free movement through either touch or tilt controls.

The classic style is reborn allowing you to move your ship all over the screen in an effortless form. What really distinguishes Plasma-Sky is the 80 unique levels which include all kinds of deluxe boss battles. Each level presents an overflow of action with enemies seemingly raining down from above on some levels, while flying in from the sides in the classic Galaga patterns. There are tons of power-ups added in to amp up the action, and your ship upgrades as you collect energy orbs. If that wasn’t enough there’s a great score multiplier that can go up to 20, as long as you keep from taking damage.

There are other new age benefits including a health meter, and the ability to continue a game on the level you died. You have the choice to restart from scratch, but you can always just replay level 24 for instance as you attempt to play through the more intense action on your way to playing all 80 levels. There’s also a hardcore mode which increase the enemy difficulty, gets rid of the health bar, and offers no continues. Classic arcade games always suffered from being individual arcade cabinets, but iOS games have the benefit of Game Center, and it’s great to have online leaderboards for classic arcade style games. One of the truly stand out features is the graphics engine with such high quality neon artwork combined with detailed particle effects as you blast through enemies.

Plasma-Sky ($0.99, Universal) reinvents the classic arcade shooter to deliver an outstanding iOS experience by combining the best of the past, and present. It’s an exhilarating visual treat that is the best in the App Store at delivering the classic Galaga style making it a should buy.
