Dungeons are filled with dangers, and imagine if those dangers kept changing. Redungeon is a new endless dungeon crawler from Nitrome, the makers of Leap DayIceBreaker, GunBrick, Magic Touch: Wizard for Hire, and more. Their newest game emphasizes arcade action in the dungeon with all kinds of dangers to get past. The dungeon collapses behind you, so you need to keep the pace up as you’re confronted with rising spikes, floating crossbows, slime monsters, electric fields, and more.

Redungeon is an endless game, but there’s a random layout each time you play. There are many different traps that can come you way, and they’re constantly shifting around to keep you on your toes. Not only that, but the game is difficult right from the outset of a given run, rather than slowly ramping up the difficulty. While you do have to restart at the beginning upon death, you’re challenged right away, so that you don’t fall into the trap of bland repetition. There are so many ways to die, but it always feels like you can do better once you do die.

The endless nature of Redungeon is a bit disappointing long term, but there are features to somewhat alleviate that. The game includes character upgrades as well new characters with both avenues introducing new abilities. It is a bit of a grind to unlock anything new, but doing so can help you last longer in the randomly generated dungeon. Each upgrade offers an ability to counteract the traps in a particular way, and the system adds to the replay incentive. There is the inherent problem in the ultimate goal being to last longer, but that’s the case for any endless game. The swipe controls also require a bit of deliberate movement, otherwise you don’t move as many tiles as you thought, or you move to many, both resulting in death.

Redungeon (Free, Universal) keeps the action and challenge up in each random run making it well worth picking up.
