Heavy is the head that wears the crown. It’s time to feel just how heavy it is in the new iOS game Reigns. It’s a card based adventure in which you swipe either left or right to make various decisions that a king could come across. With every decision that you make, you need to be cognizant of the impact on the church, the people, the army, and the treasury. The goal is to constantly balance the four aspects of your kingdom, as if any of them reach the bottom or top, your reign will end.

Each card you face counts as one year in your reign, and you only have two choices per situation. The situations range from the expected to the fantastical as you march your way through history with each reign. Every king is shown on a timeline starting from the 600s, and occasional historical moments in game will appear in line with actual happenings. It’s great to have that continuous experience as you keep losing, and there’s also a continuous supply of objectives that can also impact your decision making. Each card has the potential to ruin your reign, and it’s great to test the strategy across different reigns. You can be whichever king you like, or change based on the situations and your current standing in each of the four categories.

There’s so much to like in Reigns to the point that it’s easy to get lost going from card to card and reign to reign trying out different styles, and seeing what might come next. There are so many potential scenarios to face, and as time advances, you will come across new characters that include their own unique cards. There are also special scenarios including encountering dungeons, duels, the devil, and more. It’s simply fun to decide whether or not to form an alliance, go on a crusade, quarantine a disease outbreak, commit adultery, and so much more. After a while, you can see some card repetition, but you always know new cards are coming soon. You also have the constant goal to extend your reign for as long as possible, and there are temporary boosts and negatives that require you react on the fly. There’s a great deal of strategy at all times, and it’s presented in a very accessible style.

Reigns ($2.99, Universal) is an amazing experience that will keep you intrigued for a long time to come making it a must have iOS game.
