Imagine if lines and dots could become moving images right before your eyes. That’s the premise of the app Stripes | Magic Moving Images, which is supposed to make magic moving images. The app gives you various black and white images that are composed of solid images, with dashes all around them. There is a black and white slider panel that you can drag over the image. As the slider crosses over the image, the dashed lines fill into the overall image, and then the image begins to move.

For example a Cheetah looks out of focus as a still image, but then the slider passes over, and it looks like the Cheetah is running on the screen. The moving image technique has been done in the real world with multiple drawings on a circular paper, that is then spun around. Everything is already done on your iOS device, and all you have to do is drag the slider across the screen to see the images in motion. There are six categories of images, and each set has 5 images, meaning there are 30 total.

The problem is that 15 of the images are locked, and you need to buy the $0.99 in-app purchase to unlock all 30 images. The $0.99 app is really a $1.99 app to get all the images, and 15 images for a dollar isn’t that good of a deal. All the images are neat once through, but there isn’t much long term entertainment from the app. You can only see the same movements from the images so many times.

It’s great to see a hummingbird, windmills, wavy lines, Pac-man, an elephant and many more. You determine the flow based on the speed you drag the slider, and you can always go in reverse. One pain with the app is that you usually drag too fast, and it’s rather difficult to move the slider at the speed the developer intended. You can get the accurate motion by sliding and letting go, but the slider doesn’t maintain a constant pace, and dies out mid-slide. An automatic slider option would help, so that you could choose to sit back and enjoy the images.

The interface is a bit tough to manage, as you swipe left and right to move the slider, and swipe up and down to change images. It’s very tough to move through the images, as even your up and down swipe is recognized as moving the slider.

Stripes | Magic Moving Images ($0.99, iPhone / $0.99, iPad) is neat on the surface, and enjoyable once through all the images. After seeing each image in motion, there isn’t much left to do, and there are only 15 images each for two separate $0.99 purchases. The interface could use some improvements, and there just needs to be more lengthy entertainment from the app.

Stripes | Magic Moving Images does a lot of things wrong, and you can definitely skip out on the “magic”.
