It’s time to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no space gnome has gone before. Samorost 3 is a new iOS game that lets you guide a space gnome through the galaxy, and use a magical flute to interact with the native creatures of alien worlds. There are nine different planets to journey to in this puzzle adventure game from the makers of Botanicula and Machinarium. Samorost 3 has a similar point and click adventure style as well as design aesthetic, especially in comparison to Botanicula. That doesn’t mean that Samorost 3 doesn’t stand on its own, and you don’t even need to be aware that this is the third installment in the series.
Samorost 3 emphasizes exploration above all else, as you’re traveling to strange new worlds. Each world is composed of multiple scenes, and each individual scene delivers one puzzle sequence to figure out. The game does a great job of having each individual scene connect to the others, so you may need to pick up something in one area to use in the solution to another area. There’s a nice expansive puzzle layout to figure out, while still offering focused puzzles to figure out. Each new scene you come across provides little in the way of hints, and you’re left to tap on various items to see what you can interact with.
The world of Samorost is gorgeous with such strange creations depicted so intricately. Each alien world has its own unique design highlighted by the creatures you will encounter. There’s a musical component to some of the puzzles, as you will play the magic flute to unlock secrets. The flute will call out spirits that offer hints to guide you forward, and each one is tied to its own musical style. There are so many audio and visual intricacies to uncover as you work towards the varying puzzle solutions. Samorost 3 will have you stumped from time to time since it emphasizes exploration so much, but that’s all part of the experience. It will take time to move through each of the nine alien worlds, and it’s about appreciating the journey. With that said, the game has a puzzle mini-game to try to unlock a hint system for each area. It’s up to you, how many times to go to the hints, but the option is always there.
Samorost 3 ($4.99, Universal) delivers an immersive iOS experience that is a must have on the platform.
