Prepare to slice limbs off of your opponent, and use those limbs to become stronger, as you battle through a nightmarish world in the new iOS game Severed. The game delivers familiar mechanics in an all new adventure that is packed with style. Severed offers the core slicing style of Fruit Ninja integrated with the battle components of Infinity Blade to make for an accessible style. There’s an RPG dungeon crawler structure to battle your way through including a forking upgrade chart.

Severed has multiple elements you have seen before, but combines them together for an engaging iOS adventure. You get to play as a one-armed warrior named Sasha who’s aiming to track down her family. To do so, you will need to explore the world filled with frightening entities depicted with a bright array of colors. There are numerous details to appreciate that bring the nightmarish theme to life. The game translates each region into a series of rooms to travel between that can include monsters, puzzles, or pick-ups. There’s a mini-map in the upper right corner to help you keep traveling to unexplored regions, and there are a lot of surprises along the way.

The overarching storyline of Severed offers incentive, but the core gameplay is what keeps you playing. Each battle requires intense swiping with a subtly delicate touch to truly succeed in the game. You will face multiple enemies concurrently, and each one has their own attack style. The game requires to to switch between the enemies, and then swipe at the right time and at the proper angle to defeat each enemy. It’s a thoroughly engaging challenge, as you avoid swiping recklessly, and instead each swipe should have a focus in mind. Each enemy will be open to certain attacks, and if you string together successful hits, you can fill up your focus meter to be able to sever limbs when an enemy is defeated. If you take a hit, or an enemy blocks your attack, you lose your hit combo. That means, you need to be focused with your swipes because the severed limbs are the currency for the upgrades.

It’s easy to get caught up in the smaller picture of moving a step ahead and battling enemies. There’s an overall journey as well, and it’s nice to take a step back and appreciate all that’s included in Severed. You will come across strange doors, new enemy types, and all new locations that will trigger elements from earlier in the game. The story doesn’t present itself often, but when it does, it’s that much more memorable. At times, it can seem you’re just going from room to room with little rhyme or reason other than exploring where you haven’t been. Then, you will come across a tile that sends you back to a previous area, but on a new path allowing you unlock previous blocked stretches. It all adds up to such a well designed experience that really nails every aspect of touch and compelling gaming.

Severed ($6.99, Universal) is simply an immersive piece of entertainment that is a must have on the iOS platform.
