Shaquille O’Neal was an unmatched force on the court, and has extended himself in a number of ways off the court. ShaqDown is a new iOS game starring Shaq, and he’s poised for a zombie beat down, hence the name ShaqDown. The game is a 2D side scrolling beat ‘em up where you control Shaq on his way to defeat the mutant zombies that stand in his way. Shaq can plow through weaker zombies, and you can also swipe up or down for an uppercut or takedown.
The beef of the game is the story mode with three lengthy levels, and a concluding boss battle to each level. After the story mode, you unlock an endless zombie ShaqDown, and you can use the in-game currency to unlock higher difficulties. ShaqDown is all about action with each level composed of three layers, and zombies standing on all three levels. You swipe to move between the levels, as there’s three classes of zombies with big ones that you simply have to avoid. The middle class of zombies needs you to tap the screen to use the free throw mode to toss a basketball at it before you then use another move that you can use on the weakest zombies.
There’s definitely a surprising amount of action, and while it’s appealing because Shaq stars in it, the gameplay can definitely stand on its own. It may not be the most complex game in the App Store, but it’s an engaging and challenging experience. The game also features achievements, and abilities to unlock to keep you playing on top of the intrinsic nature of the game. There’s also some high quality graphics with a comic book/Street Fighter style all flowing with the great overall speed of the game.
ShaqDown ($0.99, Universal) is an entertaining action game that has a humorous premise, and deluxe beat ‘em up gameplay, making it wroth the price of admission.
