New tournaments each day | Great matching system | Fun racing gameplay | Great design

May be a bit too easy | Racing style doesn't change much

It takes some creativity to actually distinguish yourself in the App Store, but Sky Gnomes has a number of unique aspects to do so. First off, you’re piloting snow engines with gnomes in a sky diving race. The racing aspect provides online multiplayer that offers a new twist as there is asynchronous racing where you race against recorded runs of other users. You get to play against other players from around the world without any of the drawbacks of live connections.

The main distinction and highlight is daily multiplayer tournaments that provide something new to do everyday. You’re put into different leagues based on your skill level, and you compete with nine other players to post the best time for the given course. You can race as much as you want during the day to better your time, and only the top three earn trophies and other awards. The tournaments are always competitive because of the match making engine, and there’s a new tournament with new opponents each and every day.

The gameplay itself revolves around a 3D skydiving race to the bottom as you descend through the skies to the landing platform. You try to collect snowflakes to boost your snow engine, and there are coins and checkpoints along the way. The coins can be used to upgrade your snow engine, and you can buy some more coins with IAP. There’s a dynamic weather engine that supplies the snowflakes as well as the cloud, storms, and ice obstacles which always provide a unique race. The game design is superb whether it’s the 3D engine you speed through or the weather elements. The controls are also plenty smooth as you’re given a pilot stick to control your descent.

Sky Gnomes ($0.99, Universal) is an engaging and unique experience that is exceptionally well designed. There is so much to keep coming back to, which makes this game a should buy and worthwhile entertainment for iOS.
