Stargate SG-1 is a sci-fi classic, and there’s a new iOS game based on the series that has come out of nowhere from relative unknown, Arkalis Interactive. The game is a 3D action adventure that is similar to TellTale’s Back to the Future and Jurassic Park, but with more action. Stargate SG-1: Unleashed is obviously intriguing to Stargate fans, but can also stand alone even if you’re unfamiliar with the series. The story included stands on its own with plenty of background, and detail as well as great sci-fi topics including alien destruction and time travel.
The game includes the voice over of the original SG-1 cast, and you get to alternate controlling all four members of the team. The style is familiar, but feels new thanks to the touch centric design allowing for various swipes, and taps to perform actions. There are also gun battles, stealth missions, dialogue choices, and puzzles to solve to deliver the true action adventure style. The action is the definite highlight to keep the story moving, and to keep you actively engaged and immersed in the Stargate universe.
The entire game feels like a multi-part episode with the detailed 3D graphics to provide that interactive movie style that TellTale is known for. Arkalis has crafted one fine game engine for everything to run without a hitch on the latest generation devices, and the character modeling is superb. The storyline can get a bit heavy with some long winded speeches filled with alien jargon, but it’s worth sitting through even as an outsider. The main drawback is that the game is relatively short with nine quick chapters as each one really delivers only one mission. This is episode one of a three part series, and while episode one is enjoyable, it just comes to an end too quickly.
Stargate SG-1: Unleashed ($4.99, Universal) is a finely crafted 3D action adventure with varied gameplay, spirited sequences, and great visuals. Stargate SG-1: Unleashed can appeal to fans, and non-fan alike to make it a should buy for an entertaining sci-fi exploration.
