Starship Troopers: Invasion Mobile Infantry – We Got Bugs

3.5 Overall Score
Gameplay: 3.5/5
Design: 3.5/5
Duration: 3.5/5

Blends two gameplay styles | Packed with action | Dedicated to theme

Repetitive nature | No checkpoints | Covered shooter mode doesn't have enough player defenses

Starship Troopers is a classic movie that offers over the top action bordering on humorous. The movie has spawned straight to DVD sequels, and there’s actually a new one with Starship Troopers Invasion. There’s also a new iOS game to go along with the movie, Starship Troopers: Invasion “Mobile Infantry”, which isn’t simply a movie tie-in game. In fact it’s quite innovative for iOS as it combines the 3D endless runner genre with a covered shooter all using the Unity engine for deluxe 3D graphics as you blast away giant space arachnids.

The game pits you in the mobile infantry unit, and your character runs automatically, and you swipe to jump, slide, and turn as in Temple Run. After the running sequence, you’ll come across a covered area, and then the game is set-up similar to Epoch. You swipe to leap between covered areas, and you tap on the bugs to aim and fire as they come at you. You really get two games in one with the various style, and after completing a covered section you’re back running again. The two modes trade off nicely with great speed and action throughout.

The 3D design is also worth commending with such an authentic look to the bugs as well as the spurting green blood. There are four different environments to unlock, and there are plenty of weapon and character upgrades as well. The Starship Troopers game stands on its own, though fans of the movie will no doubt get an extra kick out of the theme. Even with the covered and running segments, it’s still an endless game so it becomes rather repetitive replaying the same shooter sections again each time you die. The game could really take the genre to the next level by implementing optional checkpoints and levels with an adventure feel tied to the movie storyline, but that’s not the case.

Starship Troopers: Invasion “Mobile Infantry” ($0.99, Universal) is worth picking up for some action packed entertainment that nicely combines two differently gameplay style into one. Want some, get some.
