If you just haven’t had enough Temple Run after the original, Temple Run: Brave, Temple Run 2, and the countless spin-offs, and clones, there’s now Temple Run Oz. Disney has paired with Imangi Studios once again, and like Temple Run: Brave, Temple Run: Oz is a movie tie-in version. While Brave was based on the original Temple Run, Oz is based on Temple Run 2. That’s definitely a good thing, as Temple Run 2 really refreshed the formula with their curving and rising course, mine car and zip line, and brand new graphics engine. Temple Run: Oz provides the tried and true 3D endless runner formula, but adds so much to it to make the game feel brand new all over again.

The best aspect of Temple Run: Oz is the beautifully crafted environments with so much detail applied to the surroundings based on the movie. It’s an absolutely beauty to see as you whizz past, and you get to run on the yellow brick road, up through the mountains, and through the dark forest. Each environment keeps things fresh, and each one offers its own unique set of challenges which are presented with brilliant animations. If the running wasn’t enough, you can also stumble upon the hot air balloon for a special mode, similar to the mine car ride in Temple Run 2.

The base game is still the same as you swipe, and tilt to control Oz, collect coins, and try to run for as long as you can, and this time running from flying monkeys. There are also similar upgrades, challenges, and gems as in Temple Run 2, but the new weekly challenges are a nice added bonus. Speaking of bonuses, there are also musical keys to collect for a special post-run bonus section. The biggest takeaway is just how finely crafted the layouts are with great pacing of obstacles, turns, and rising and falling landscapes. The flow is just brilliant for an action packed run, and the changing environments make for an enjoyable run each time.

Temple Run Oz ($0.99, Universal) easily stands on its own as an enjoyable iOS experience that is worth picking up. It’s off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of oz running for his life in an action packed treat on iOS.
