APP NAME: The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore
DEVELOPER(S): Moonbot Studios
RELEASE DATE(S): May 31st, 2011
Not all ebooks are created equal, and the complexity of some narratives deserves to be in the App Store rather than just the iBook Store. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore is unlike anything else in the App Store. It combines an animated movie, interactive app, and entertaining story all into one. As soon as you flip to the first page, you know this is some, thing different, and you can’t wait to dive in deeper. Every page provides a little text, a short animated clip, and at least one thing to interact with.
There are 27 of these unique pages with each one a treat by itself. There is background music, sound effects, and optional voice over as well to offer full immersion in the story. The Fantastic Flying Books is a total experience, and so much more than just a book. The book is based upon the short film of the same name, and you get clips from the film right in the book. The animated style is reminiscent of Pixar, and it further allows the story to come to life.
There are a bunch of interactive features, and the best part is that you don’t know exactly what you can interact with. Each page offers up something new to do as you can swipe to animate the scene, tap on various objects for different feedback, piece together a page, and even play a tune. The app is just so deluxe, and it really shows what the iPad is capable of.
The story itself is a great tale of the power of books, and the few words speak volumes about what stories are capable of. The entire theme is heart warming, and there are some life connections with the movie Up. Since the book is only a short story, there is only so much to it, but you’ll want to go through it multiple times. The app provides an experience you’ll want to share with others, and you’ll just love having it on your iPad.
The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore ($4.99, iPad) is a must buy that improves the iPad as a whole. The app gives credence to the thoughts presented within. You can also check out the 15 minute animated short film that the book is based on in iTunes for $2.99 HD or $1.99 SD.
