The Great War was an unprecedented global scale conflict that affected the course of human history like nothing before. Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a new game set during World War I that provides a point, and click adventure style that has now been ported to the touch platform. There’s an animated comic book art style, and yet the game is relatively historically accurate, which is quite a surprise. The game storyline follows the timeline of the actual war, and the diverse characters each play a key role. You go from the French countryside to German prisoner on through to trench warfare, all while solving puzzles along the way.
The story of Valiant Hearts is highly engaging to keep you actively pursuing the progression to see what happens next. There’s an endearing portrayal of the characters despite very few words said, and instead the game relies on the stylized artwork, and soundtrack. Everything in the game is dependent upon how well the story is done, and the puzzles are integrated into the flow, and progression. Some puzzle adventures suffer from positioning the puzzles outside of the story, but not Valiant Hearts which makes everything you do directly tied into helping the characters move forward through the war. Each character has their own motives, but soon you have a band with a French grandfather, American widow, Belgian student, and even a four legged companion all with ties to those on the other side of the conflict.

There’s a whole to draw from Valiant Heroes as it even includes facts, pictures, and items from WWI to provide a seamless learning experience while playing. The puzzle elements may not be the most complex, but they do require some thought in the order of actions, and how all of the elements piece together. There are also action sequences of dodging enemy fire, knocking out enemies, and sneaking past guards. Each character also has special tactics to change things up as the story transitions to each one as the main character. The dog also plays a key role in being able to reach certain spots, and work with the other characters. The game features a lot of intricacies, and subtleties to keep things fresh as you dive through the relatively expansive storyline that has a multi-episode set-up. The one drawback with the game is that the touch controls can be a bit bothersome at times, but it just takes a little more deliberate action.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War ($4.99, Universal) is a thoroughly engaging, and entertaining story driven experience that is a must have title. It’s worth noting that the download includes episode one, and there are three more episodes available for a multi-pack discount.
