Great tennis flow | Controls extremely well suited for iOS | New daily tournaments

Some player movements are a bit stiff | Controls become unresponsive in online multiplayer

Virtua Tennis has seen many incarnations over the years and across platforms, and now Virtua Tennis Challenge is serving on iOS. There’s yet to be a really good iOS tennis game, and the new Virtua Tennis Challenge just may be it From the opening screen of the first court, you can appreciate the 3D design of the stadium, court, and players. Once the action gets going, you can enjoy the player animations, and flow of the game.

The highlight of Virtua Tennis Challenge is the touch controls allowing you perform top spin, slice, lob, and drop shots all from swipe gestures. It’s such an intuitive and responsive control scheme that allows you to control the tennis action wonderfully. You can also tap anywhere to run to that spot to help position your player for the next shot. The entire game is made with the player in mind which means your player can adjust for shots automatically. The entire system makes for a high quality tennis game that just happens to be on iOS.

The tennis gameplay provides plenty of challenge and action that makes for one of the best translations of real world sports to iOS. The gameplay allows for engaging matches throughout the STP World Tour with a full season of tournaments. Every real world day provides new tournaments to enter so there’s a lot of replayability with this one. You also get to play on grass, clay, and hard indoor courts against a wide variety of player skill levels. There are 18 stadiums and 15 players to use, and you can also compete in doubles in exhibition mode.

Virtua Tennis Challenge ($4.99, Universal) is easily the best tennis game in the App Store, and more importantly just a great tennis experience. It’s a should buy, and a top tier sports game for the platform.
