CES 2015: Kwikset, Schlage, And August Unveil New Smart Door Locks

The emphasis of CES 2015 has been bringing the internet the everyday household items. There have been a few smart internet connected door locks in the past, but CES 2015 saw all new entries with fancy new features. Kwikset is a well known name in residential door looks, and at CES they announced the Kevo Plus. It’s an extension of their smart lock platform, and the new Kevo Plus introduces remote access. The Kevo Plus is a Bluetooth enabled lock that lets you unlock it with the Kevo app.

The remote connection in 2015 uses a free Bluetooth enabled gateway that plugs into your router to create a secure connection between the lock, and your Kevo account. You can now unlock your door from anywhere in the world using your iPhone. The app can also monitor any activity on the door, while providing scheduled eKeys to enable guests to unlock at specific times, and dates. Kwikiset also announced a new partnership with Nest, so that the smart thermostat can set Away mode when you lock the door, and enable natural temperatures when you lock the door. Kevo Plus will launch in the Spring, though no pricing information was revealed.

Schlage is another well known name in locks, and they were showing off the Bluetooth enabled lock, the Schlage Sense. It’s a touch-pad enabled smart lock that supports unlocking via codes, as well as accompanying the smartphone app. The Schlage Sense is Apple HomeKit enabled for end-to-end encryption and authentication with your iPhone. The most noteworthy feature is the ability to ask Siri to unlock their doors, which is an added benefit of the HomeKit integration. There’s also “Built-in-Alarm Technology” that alerts you when it senses potential break in attempts. Schlage didn’t provide pricing details, and only said it will launch later in 2015 in either Camelot or Century styles, and Matte Black, Satin Nickel, or Aged Bronze colors.

Finally, for smart door locks is the August Smart Lock, which is a Bluetooth only smart lock that is sold in Apple retail stores. At CES, they announced the August Connect, which is a $50 bridge that lets you control the lock over the Internet. August is also introducing a new third party API, though no word on HomeKit integration. The August Smart Lock retails for $249.95, and the August Connect will be $49.99 when it starts shipping in mid-February.
