iPhone X Event: Apple Introduces The iPhone 8 / Plus

Apple began the iPhone portion of the program with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The new devices feature glass on both sides, and the glass is reinforced by steel and copper to be the “most durable ever” glass on a smartphone. The device continues to feature microscopic resistance to water and dust. The retina display now includes the True Tone ambient light sensor from the iPad Pro. There are also stereo speakers on the iPhone 8 now.

On the inside, there is new 6 core A11 bionic chip that is claimed to be “the most powerful and smartest chip ever on a smartphone”. The 6 core configuration breaks down with two performance cores that are 25% faster than the A10 and four high efficiency cores that are 70% faster than the A10. The iPhone 8 features wireless charging with the Qi open wireless standard.

The iPhone 8 camera includes a new 12MP sensor with deeper pixels, a new color filter, and for the first time, optical image stabilization. The 8 Plus still includes two camera sensors, but now they’re both enhanced for better lighting capture. That includes a new Portrait Lighting mode to adjust the lighting of a portrait photo, just by swiping your finger. The camera continues with new video capture capabilities with real time image and motion analysis to analyze 2 million tiles every second to match lighting as your recording perspective changes. There’s also new 1080P slo-mo at 240 frames per second. Both iPhone 8’s also have their camera calibrated for Augmented Reality. That includes 60 frames per second and low light performance with accurate motion tracking.

The iPhone 8 will start at $699 for 64GB with a 256GB option, and the iPhone 8 Plus will start at $799 with the same two storage configurations.
