Roller Coaster Tycoon is a standard that all other theme park building games will be judged by. We have always hoped for that type of game on iOS, just made with touch controls, and Coaster Crazy is right along those lines. It comes from the makers of LostWinds, and it lets you create scare filled roller coasters by just dragging your finger across the screen. There’s a lot more to it than that though as you’re building and editing your coaster in 3D with the opportunity to add in loops, corkscrews, and all kinds of special sections.

Crazy Coaster is set-up so that you’re only building roller coasters, and you continually unlock new parcels of land to build on by completing coasters. Every new coaster has three objectives you need to achieve to open it up for riders to enjoy. There are various challenges including a certain level of G Forces, time upside down, certain pieces, and reaching an overall score. Every coaster is scored based on how intense you make it, and you can get a front row seat for just how crazy your coaster is.

The game is a lot like Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, which is a definite step back from the first two, but still a great theme park building experience. The third installment introduced the 3D elements as well as a first person camera perspective, and both aspects are included in Coaster Crazy. It’s great to build a twisting coaster that is vomit inducing, and then have the whole ride flowing on your screen as though you were sitting in the front car. Your roller coasters also have crazies ready to ride allowing you to test out if the cart can make it through without flying off the rails.

There’s a lot of personality packed in to the point that you can crash your coasters if you want to. As you complete coasters, you unlock new parcels of land, and even new continents which introduce even more intense coaster types to create. At the beginning, you’re limited to steel coasters, a couple of special track types, and only 500 feet of track. These limits are slowly lifted, and soon you’ll be making amazing roller coasters with even more intense challenges that you will love to virtually ride with the first person perspective. The entire game is excellently crafted for a top notch 3D design coupled with a great physics engine to help you balance the forces on your coaster.

The one potential drawback is that Coaster Crazy is in essence Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 with a freemium model, and touch control scheme. The touch controls are a bit tedious to manipulate the camera angle while trying to adjust a specific part of your track. It’s manageable, but not as smooth as could be. The freemium model could get in the way, but it’s balanced relatively well allowing you to enjoy the game for free, as you earn the in-app currency at a good pace to keep building new coasters. There are still some time restrictions as you would expect, but you can still fully enjoy all the game has to offer.

Coaster Crazy (Free, Universal) really delivers one heck of a ride that is quite surprising for how deluxe of a game it is on iOS. The 3D design, first person camera, physics engine, and coaster crafting are on par with Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, and that makes it an excellent download that fans of the series will love to see available on iOS.
