To be completely honest, it’s hard to get excited for another matching puzzle game. That’s not say you can’t get excited for, and enjoy playing a new one that comes along. Backflips Studios, who have made Paper Toss, Ragdoll Blaster, and NinJump have a new puzzle game. Shape Shift is the name, and swapping tiles to make colored matches is the game. You’re given five colors and three shapes, and you can swap the same shape to try to create matches of four of the same color.

As you advance, bombs arrive and they explode after they remain on the board for a specific number of moves. The board set-up allows for big chains after you make certain matches, especially ones with the bombs. The only problem here is that you can’t keep the combo chain going because you can’t move while the tiles are readjusting after a match. You have to wait until everything settles down until you move again, so the combo chain is up to one move, and how the new pieces fall in.

Shape Shift is simply fun, and there is really no other way to put it. You can play the same in short bursts, and then be surprised how much time has passed when you just keep swapping tiles. The puzzle gameplay isn’t revolutionary, but it’s great to spot a big group of green, and then go find a green square to swap with the orange square currently in place. The game doesn’t have the most advanced graphics engine, but all the matches look nice and everything is nicely polished.

Shape Shift takes awhile to become challenging, and does have a more casual feel to it. The game has a leveling system that increases the difficulty, and there is also a relaxing zen mode. It would be nice to be able to pick up at level plateau, so you can jump right into more challenging sections if you want to. Game Center is included for online high scores and achievements to add to the intrinsic replay factor of the game.

Shape Shift is free with ads like many other Backflips Studios games, and it’s another enjoyable one as well. Shape Shift (iPhone / iPad) is easy to play and enjoy, so download it today because however you shift this shape it comes out fun.
